Boys and Guns

By Val Flores

Yesterday, I walked into a co-worker’s office to discuss a business issue and I noticed that she had http://www.expertsatellite.com/ pulled up on her computer. She said she was learning about satellite television. From that initiation statement, our conversation turned to television programming for children. She has two young boys and I have four grandsons. We discussed parental controls and educational viewing and what her sons like to watch. Boys are innately programmed to like playing with guns. They enjoy movies that include shooting, whether the guns fire because of hunting in the woods or because there are cops and robbers or murderers and thieves.

As parents, it is important to help them understand how dangerous guns are, even when using them legally and adhering to the usage laws. While we try to shelter them from the evening news and all that is bad in the world, sometimes it is necessary that they hear about shootings, even and especially the accidental shootings that are fatal and sad, in order to understand just how dangerous they are.

We can’t really refrain from these things specially during childhood where guns are usually the favorite toy for boys. While we as parents try to educate them about the dangers of using guns, we won’t be sure of what’s gonna happen next.

I try to discourage my boys from playing with toy guns and instead direct their attention to sports, soccer being a gane they’ve particularly taken to. The problem I have with toy guns and role playing is how it may decencitize children to the real dangers guns can present. I know other peoples viewpoint can differ, and I respect that.

When you see a gun being used in an action movie there’s always slick camera angles and tense/cool music to distract from the fact that bullets passing through a body at speed is a horrible nauseating event.

If only all countries conflicts could be settled by sticking one politician from each side in a boxing ring and letting them have at it 🙂

Its very important that we should do away with the toys like guns that inspire violence in the kids. Though it seems difficult, but we should take it as a collective responsibility of the society. There is no doubt that, we should expect our future generations to grow in a manner in which we will educate, train and groom them.

You are right. Everything starts from parents. They are the ones, who give them every thing needed. Just distracting them to some decent childhood game in their early age can lead to a different development and exposure for them…

As parents and members of the community we must seek ways to lessen the arising of violence in our environment and this step must start in our own home from our children. I appreciate this article. This serves as mind awakening as well.

    Cheers! and Great Day!
